Maddie Olsen is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Baltimore, Maryland. Maddie grew up a close and quiet observer, with a penchant for friendships with animals and playing in the dirt. The interspecies communities of fiber crafts and biofabrication drew her into a practice that dwells within those spaces.
Maddie examines the ways that domestic spaces structure themselves, and then compares them to a wider range of biological and chemical processes. Their work invents an alternative ecological framework that reflects upon the poetics of these connections. Mediums like weaving and crochet mimic systems of repetition and accumulation that are intrinsic to cellular growth, while bioplastics reference the effects of time and memory. With a focus on material exploration, these bio-domestic objects exist to offer a perspective on the relationships of human/nonhuman, object/being, and science/love.
